What’s the number 1 app that Americans aged 18- to 34-years-old said they couldn’t live without? No, it’s not SnapChat, WhatsApp or Instagram. It’s not even Facebook! In a survey conducted by comScore’s 2017 US Mobile App Report of Apps that were “most essential” to Millenials, Gmail ranked second and Facebook ranked third.
Believe it or not, SnapChat didn’t even make the cut and was not featured on the most essential apps for those surveyed.
So what made the number one spot for 18- to 34-year-olds? Surprisingly, the highest ranked app was Amazon! Over a third of those surveyed said they can’t live without the Amazon app, which highlights some interesting habits of this tech-savvy millennial generation.
Thanks to a cool graphic over at Business Insider, here is the Top 10 list from the survey:
Note that the survey asked the respondents which apps were the “most essential”, not the most ‘fun’ or ‘entertaining’. Andrew Lipsman of comScore had the following to say: “It speaks to a broader insight, which is that millennials seem to recognize the importance of the more functional apps, like Amazon, Gmail and Google Maps.”
Amazon makes up a component of one of the FANG stocks (the acronym used to signify four high performing technology stocks in the market as of 2017), and the company has grown significantly over the past several years. This survey, which places Amazon as the number one most essential app, highlights some interesting trends which could spell good news for this Jeff Bezos owned tech giant. For example, as this particular generation ages and grows their earning power, and therefore has more disposable income, this could signal strong growth prospects for the companies that make the list of most essential apps for this group of people. And with the number 1 spot on the list, Amazon is primed well for future earnings potential (pun intended!).
Amazon is already becoming an unrelenting force: with the dominance of Amazon Prime over home deliveries, the far-reaching powers of business services such as Amazon Web Services, and now the gamble into the groceries market with the acquisition of Whole Foods, Amazon is set to have an exciting few years ahead.
